Pacquiao plans to taper off training
After going 12 blazing rounds during two sparring days last week, Manny Pacquiao will now begin to cut down on his training in the final days leading to his mega match with Ricky Hatton on May 2 in Las Vegas.
“Manny did 12 rounds on two occasions, Thursday and Saturday,” Pacquiao’s conditioning coach Alex Ariza told the Bulletin Monday from Los Angeles.
“He’s been amazing and people will be surprised how strong and fast he is on fight night.”
Ariza said while almost everybody keeps on talking about Hatton’s advantage in size and power, he’d be the least astounded if Pacquiao ends up taking apart Hatton with ease before a sellout crowd at the MGM Grand.
“People will be surprised if Manny matches Hatton’s power or becomes stronger than him,” said Ariza, who regularly watches Pacquiao’s morning roadwork and likewise helps the Filipino engage in calisthenics every afternoon at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.
Ariza said a new sparring partner — said to be a young Russian 140-pounder — gave Pacquiao plenty of action in the two sparring days.
“He fights like Hatton,” said Ariza of the new addition to Team Pacquiao’s training camp after Mike Alvarado, an unbeaten slugger from Colorado, opted to stay away from the gym after tasting the fury of Pacquiao’s flurry some two weeks ago.
Pacquiao reported for training camp in the first week of March, two weeks after Hatton began his training in Manchester.
