Hatton plods on under Mayweather
Nice and easy. Slow but sure.
That’s how Ricky Hatton has been treating his preparation for his much-awaited brawl with Manny Pacquiao on May 2 in Las Vegas, based on reports from his training camp that a key figure relayed yesterday.
Paul Speak, a long-time Hatton pal who also serves as his spokesperson, agent and PR man, revealed that after three weeks of training, the 30-year-old Manchester native continues to work hard under the watchful eyes of defense wizard Floyd Mayweather Sr.
"Ricky has been in training for three weeks," said Speak. "Floyd Mayweather Sr. has been with him in England for two weeks."
Speak also revealed that Hatton hasn't even started sparring but plans to do so "until later in the month or the start of next month."
Las Vegas will be the site of Hatton's US training camp and it will be there where he undergoes the most crucial phase of his buildup for Pacquiao.
Team Hatton leaves for the US at the end of this month, shortly after the Hitman’s brother, Matthew Hatton, figures in a crossroads fight on March 28 in the town of Cheshire, which is just outside Manchester.
"Ricky is promoting the fight and (he) will be there for his brother," said Speak.
Two weeks ago when Hatton and Pacquiao starred in a whirlwind press tour of London and Manchester, Hatton looked as though he had been a regular fixture in the local buffet.
But Alex Ariza, the conditioning coach of Pacquiao, said he had the chance to see Hatton up close when he was in Manchester helping Amir Khan get in shape and he told Roach that Hatton's been looking good, stressing that reports of him weighing as much as 180 lbs are totally untrue.
"I have seen him and he’s working very hard," said Ariza, who has been recalled back to Los Angeles to begin strength training with Pacquiao.
