Pacquiao is smarter than Hatton, says Roach
Celebrated boxing coach Freddie Roach is fully confident that his ward, Manny Pacquiao, has the upper hand in his upcoming bout against British fighter Ricky Hatton. The reason: Pacquiao is the smarter boxer of the two.
“Strength doesn't win this fight, smarts does,” Roach said in an interview by The Sun. “My guy's the smarter guy."
Roach, who turned 49 on Thursday, said Hatton will probably try to engage his ward to an in-and-out fighting style. He, however, thinks it will be pointless.
"Once he feels Manny’s punches, he'll revert to what he does best -- and that's fight,” said Roach.
Roach added that he doesn’t foresee the fight going the full 12 rounds as both fighters are expected to go all out.
"I think it will be a late round fight," Freddie said. "But I don't see it going the distance. Both guys are tough guys and they are going to attack the body early, trying to break each other down.”
Pacquiao will be spending eight weeks on training for his quest to win a fifth world title on the expense of Hatton.
At stake in the Battle of East and West is Hatton’s IBO and The Ring Magazine light welterweight title.
