Hatton told: Ditch booze or get whipped
MANILA, Philippines—Ricky Hatton, who has vowed to produce the performance of his career when he meets Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas on May 2, has been warned by trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. to ditch alcoholic drinks completely, or “he could get whipped by a nobody.”
“I don’t like boxers drinking and Ricky would be much better off without it,” said Mayweather Sr., who plans to attend an event promoted by Hatton in Bristol, England, next week to make sure that the “British Hitman” keeps off the booze.
“He could get whooped by a nobody because he is doing the wrong thing with his body,” the father of former pound-for-pound king Floyd Jr. added.
“I’ve spoken to him about it and I hope he gets the message. It’s going to catch up with him somewhere down the line.”
Hatton, who celebrated by drinking several pints of beer after knocking out Paulie Malignaggi last year, is oozing with confidence that he’ll be able to overpower Pacquiao in their light welterweight (140 lb) showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
“It’s not just about my size and me being bigger than he is or me trying to bulldoze him over,” Hatton told boxingscene.com.
“I realize that I can’t run straight in on him and go in without watching at what’s coming back at me. But now I’ve got the technical ability to back up my size edge.”
Mayweather’s counterpart, Freddie Roach, doesn’t seem to have that same dilemma with Pacquiao, who was busy leading the celebration marking the 49th birthday of his trainer at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.
Dr. Ed de la Vega of philboxing.com reported that Pacquiao took the lead in presenting Roach a commemorative frame with photos taken during the “Dream Match” between Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya fight last year.
Meanwhile, majority of fans voting in an online poll on mannypacquiao.ph see the Filipino hero winning by knockout in the later rounds, similar to his victories against De La Hoya and David Diaz.
Out of the 7,008 fans who responded to the poll, 65 percent expect a late knockout, while 26 percent believe Pacquiao will prevail via an early knockout.
Only 3.5 percent see the fight going the distance with 3 percent of them predicting Pacquiao ending up victorious.
Two percent see Hatton winning via an early knockout.
