Hatton Wants Marquez Next, Not Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Rumors of a boxing comeback by Floyd Mayweather Jr. continue. Everything seems to point to a return on July 11, and then a year-end fight with the winner of the May 2 junior welterweight mega-bout between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton. According to Hatton, Mayweather is not the next fight on his list. If he beats Pacquiao in May, he would like to fight Juan Manuel Marquez, who is moving up to junior welterweight. Hatton still wants a rematch with Mayweather. He would like the rematch to take place on UK soil in the summer of 2010.

“If I beat Pacquiao I’d like to fight Marquez. Then next summer I’d love an open-air fight at Wembley Stadium against Floyd Mayweather Jr. I don’t want to be an old man in an armchair with my pipe and slippers still blaming the referee for what happened in the first fight,” Hatton said.

Making a fight between Hatton and Marquez would be easy as both of them are promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. If Hatton happens to beat Pacquiao, he may not get Marquez in the near future. If Mayweather happens to make his tentative return in July, Marquez could become the opponent. Many insiders are listing Juan as the frontrunner opponent to land that fight - if Floyd returns. If that happens, Hatton may have to settle for Mayweather - sooner than later. If Hatton beats Pacquiao and Mayweather beats Marquez, their rematch may happen at the end of the year - and probably on American soil.
