Pacquiao returning ABS-CBN a favor for 'excellent' coverage: analyst

Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao's decision to return to ABS-CBN was a sign of gratitude for the network's "extremely wide excellent coverage" despite not having the rights to air his recent fights, a boxing analyst said Friday.

"The choice is with Manny. Several months he told me that he wanted to go back to ABS-CBN because it did an excellent coverage. Even though the fight was on GMA, ABS-CBN gave him extremely wide excellent coverage. Pacquiao's is just showing his gratitude," analyst Ronnie Nathanielz told ABS-CBN's morning show, "Umagang Kay Ganda."

Nathanielz, who writes for abs-cbnNEWS.com, also confirmed Pacquiao's earlier claim that it was the boxer who approached the network, and not the other way around. "He was not invited by ABS-CBN. It was his own decision. Iyon ang alam ko."

The boxing analyst, meanwhile, advised Pacquiao to maintain his focus on his upcoming fight against British champion Ricky Hatton on May 2 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Let him concentrate on the fight, don't distract him. If he does that he will win," Nathanielz said, adding that he has no doubt Pacquiao "will beat Ricky Hatton."

He said Pacquiao is now designing a "deadly weapon" against the right puncher and more aggressive Hatton.

Nathanielz said if Pacquiao is able to perfect his right hand punches, particularly the right hook, combined with his speed, he will easily beat the British champion.

"The right hook is his secret weapon against Hatton. That is his deadly weapon against Hatton because Hatton is an attacker, which makes him wide open for the right hook," he said.

Not affected

Pacquiao said he is not at all affected by the possibility of being sued for his decision to return to ABS-CBN.

“Maluwag ang loob ko. May mga tao naman ako na nag-aasikaso ng mga bagay na yan,” Pacquiao told ABS-CBN News.

He added: “Ako ang ginagawa ko ay mag-concentrate at focus sa fight ko at sana panoorin niyo fight ko at ipagdasal ako. Mapapanood niyo ang fight sa ABS-CBN versus Ricky Hatton."

“Laban ko, laban ng lahat. Maraming salamat sa inyo,” said Pacquiao.

Pacquiao has decided to rescind his contract with Solar Entertainment Corp. after it reportedly failed to "fulfill its obligation to pay stipulated fees for the subject rights.”

Solar, however, claimed it will seek legal remedies in case of breach of contract by Pacquiao.

Trainer Freddie Roach said Pacquiao's "mental game is 100 percent there already. He knows how to fight this fight and he knows how to win.”

Even if Pacquiao was in his warm-up stage, he already showed immense hand and foot speed.

Roach planned only six rounds in the mitts but Pacquiao could not be stopped. “The Pacman” ended up doing ten rounds in the session.

Pacquiao also rarely took a break in between rounds.
